Marin Vista Health and Wellness Center’s Partial Hospitalization/Day Treatment (PHP) program is a comprehensive program designed to provide structure, support and supervision in order to stabilize or sustain the patient’s recovery process. Programming consists of 7-8 hours of treatment per day, 5 days per week. Individuals may transition to this level of care after completing inpatient or residential treatment, or they may begin at this treatment level if lower levels of care are not providing enough containment and support. Most people completing the Partial Hospitalization/Day Treatment program step-down to our Intensive Outpatient program before transitioning to outpatient treatment.
Partial Hospitalization/Day Treatment Program Highlights:
- 5 days per week, Monday-Friday
- Daily group therapy 12:00pm-6:45pm
- 2 supervised meals and 1 supervised snack per day
- 2 individual psychotherapy sessions per week
- 1 family therapy session per week
- 1 nutrition counseling session per week
Advantages of Partial Hospitalization vs. Residential
The level of acuity in patients in partial hospitalization and residential treatment can be very similar. Often deciding factors between the two levels of care are based on patient choice, level of motivation and insurance coverage. The length of stay at the Partial Hospitalization/Day Treatment level of care is dictated by medical necessity and usually ranges anywhere from 2-6 weeks. Patients at this level of care require daily supervision for meals and snacks in order to decrease eating disorder symptoms. Lack of insight and limited motivation to change are common as are impairments in social, educational and work environments.
Patients in our PHP program receive many of the same services as in a residential setting, such as daily supervision for meals and snacks, individual and group therapy on a regular basis, and the support of an experienced multidisciplinary team of eating disorder experts 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. At Marin Vista, we help our patients to identify and work on their motivation to change, address any issues that may be triggering their eating disorder behaviors, and help them to work through difficulties they may be having in social, educational and work related environments.
PHP Program for Adolescents and Teens
For our adolescent clients, we work closely with the schools to develop alternative independent study programs so that teens will not fall behind in their studies while in PHP. We can also provide study periods during the treatment day so that our teen patients can do school work and/or meet with a teacher or tutor, if needed. We have worked with many schools in San Francisco and Marin, and they have all been extremely supportive of their students attending our PHP program.
Research Based Clinical Model = Excellent Patient Outcomes
Our treatment programs are modeled upon Fairburn’s enhanced cognitive behavior therapy (CBT-E) approach to eating disorder treatment and are firmly rooted in empirically validated treatments including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), family based therapy (FBT) and exposure response therapy (ERT). These groups are complemented by weekly lunch outings, stand-up paddleboard yoga, cooking classes, grocery store outings, art therapy and meal planning. We continually strive to integrate new treatment approaches into our curriculum and frequently make modifications to our programming based upon the latest scientific advances in the eating disorder treatment field.
